Florida: Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott notes DUI arrest of reporter Larry “Sam” Cook that the Sheriff believes is under-reported

Larry Alan “Sam” Cook
The Media Double-Standard
The following was distributed to  employees at the Sheriff’s Office yesterday by Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott after all local media received a similar notification the previous day:
“For many years the News-Press allowed Larry Alan Cook aka “Sam Cook” to conceal his real name, pontificate from its platform, and point his pudgy fingers at everyone else despite his felonious record and penchant for DUI, Leaving the Scene, and related issues of concern.
…It seems the fellow pictured here was skirting a crime scene and created an unnecessary distraction for our brave Deputy.  Read for yourself how yet another News-Press Reporter has run afoul in what can only be described as a blatant disregard for the law and a clear demonstration of a propensity to lie.  At least he uses his real name; although I suspect it is not too late for him to assume an alias and continue the good work of our hometown paper.
Had a current or former member of law enforcement, teacher, firefighter, etc. conducted themselves in this fashion, I am certain it would generate a bold headline but something tells me that the hypocrites at the News-Press will not deem it worthy of a headline if even any mention at all.  Whether or not other media deem it newsworthy is yet to be determined but I seriously doubt it.  As I quipped once before when a Fox 4 Reporter (John Rupollo) found himself in our corner at Monroe and MLK for domestic violence, the righteous media seems slow to report on its own.
In keeping with their consistent pattern of hypocrisy, the News-Press failed to inform the community of their Reporter’s criminal misconduct, so I encourage you to share this with others if you find it of interest.  This weasel disrespected and lied to our guy’s face like a common criminal in the street and more people should know about it.

Larry “Sam” Cook’s Story

No newspaper person wants to be the news. He wants to write or talk about the news.

Yet 27 years ago, as sports editor at the Evening Herald in Sanford, I was the news. While driving home from a bar, I hit a bicyclist on U.S. Highway 17-92 in Casselberry.

I knew I hit something, but wasn’t sure what. I did a U-turn at the next light and circled back. I couldn’t find the spot, so I pulled into a strip mall to turn around. My right-front tire went flat, punctured by the bicycle.

While changing the tire, a Casselberry police officer approached me. I told him of my dilemma. My worst fears were realized. I was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury and DUI, which was dropped.

I was lucky. The victim recovered. Nine community leaders spoke on my behalf. The judge had mercy.

After my guilty plea, Judge S. Joseph Davis Jr. sentenced me to five years of probation, 1,500 hours of community service, continued alcohol treatment, suspended my license and withheld adjudication.

I completed probation in 2½ years and avoided a felony conviction. I’ve been ticket-free in Lee County for 24 years.

I sent the judge and my supporters thank-you cards or calls on the 20th anniversary.

But every so often, folks make an issue of my crimes, which included a DUI in 1983 and a DUI reduced to reckless driving in 1979.

When readers don’t have an argument, they resort to other tactics. I understand their motive. It is the only way to attack me.

My real name is Larry, but I picked up Sam in seventh grade and used it as my professional name ever since.

Seven years ago, Paul E. Schmidt of Alva wrote to The News-Press Mailbag praising the 30-year law enforcement career of former Lee County Sheriff Rod Shoap.   …..MORE

DUI CHECKPOINTS NETS 5 DUI ARRESTS

The Temecula Police Department conducted  a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday December 13, 2013 as part of the  city of Temecula’s commitment to public safety. This checkpoint is one of many  that have been or will be conducted throughout the year in the Temecula  area.  The location of Friday’s  checkpoint was at Winchester Road and Nicholas Road.  The goal of this DUI checkpoint was to remove  impaired drivers and to bring awareness to the public of the dangers of driving  under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

 Checkpoint Results:

  • 1423 vehicles through the checkpoint
  • 1141 vehicles screened
  • 48 vehicles to secondary screening
  • 5 DUI drivers arrested
  • 30 Field Sobriety Tests conducted
  • 8 vehicles towed
  • 7 unlicensed/suspended drivers sent to Court
  • Criminal Arrest for Public Intoxication

This checkpoint and further  checkpoints in the City of Temecula are funded by the California Office of  Traffic Safety through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DUI / Driver’s License Checkpoint Planned December 13, 2013

Temecula, CA – The Temecula Police  Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on December  13, 2013, within the City of Temecula between the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 3:00  a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI  checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and  injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes.  Research shows that crashes involving an  impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI  checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.

In California, this deadly crime  led to 774 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver.  Nationally, the latest data shows nearly  10,000 were killed by an impaired driving. “Over the course of the past three  years, DUI collisions have claimed 7 lives and resulted in over 30 injury  crashes harming our friends and neighbors,” said Sergeant Magnan.

Officers will be looking for  signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for  proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily.  When possible, specially trained officers will  be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving.

Recent statistics reveal that 30  percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their  systems.  A study of active drivers  showed more tested positive for drugs  that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent,  at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

According to the National Highway  Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most  effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also  yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Nearly 90 percent of California drivers  approve of DUI checkpoints.

DUI Checkpoints are placed in  locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests affording the  greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence. Locations  are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a  DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that  can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family  find out.

Funding for this checkpoint  is provided to Temecula Police Department by a grant from the California Office  of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding  everyone to Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1.

Howard County Officer Austin George DWI

Off-duty police officer charged with DUI

An off-duty Howard County police officer was charged overnight  on Dec. 13, 2013 with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police Officer Austin Michael George was stopped around 2:20 am in Ellicott City driving his personal vehicle. George is a 2-year veteran of the Howard County Police Department and is assigned as a southern district patrol officer.

A Howard County police officer noticed a vehicle drifting in the roadway on Rogers Avenue near Route 40. The car drifted to the side of Rogers Avenue, where it came to a stop.
