Maryland State Police Impaired Driving Effort

FROM THE MARYLAND STATE POLICE:
The targeted law enforcement program was launched in May 2013 and focuses on reducing alcohol-related crashes in Maryland by targeting areas across the state with high crash rates involving impaired drivers.  The goal is to improve highway safety and help Maryland achieve the goal of zero deaths on our roadways. The SPIDRE Team is funded by the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office.

In 2013, 152 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes in Maryland, accounting for 33 percent of all traffic fatalities in the state that year. Using data to identify high-risk areas, the elite team of seven specially trained Maryland state troopers and their partners continue to make arrests in these concentrated areas to further reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by impaired driving. Maryland state troopers will continue to collaborate with law enforcement partners in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes in Maryland.

The S.P.I.D.R.E. team has saved countless lives since inception. Below are the latest statistics:

LAKEPORT POLICE REPORT INTOXICATED DRIVING ARREST; THANKING CITIZENS FOR ASSISTANCE

From Lakeport Police: This morning, June 17, 2018, at approximately 2 AM, two Lakeport Police Officers encountered a silver Mitsubishi Lancer in the downtown area. At this time no traffic stop had been initiated but the vehicle abruptly turned and rapidly accelerated

Lakeport Police DUI driver 1080 Travis Criss June 16, 2018

causing the officers to lose sight of it. A short time later an officer again spotted the vehicle at which time it again accelerated rapidly to a high rate of speed into the residential neighborhoods west of downtown. The officer initiated a traffic stop and a vehicle pursuit began with the vehicle continuing to travel at a high rate of speed and making abrupt turns. The officer lost sight of the vehicle at which time the pursuit was terminated for public safety.

Officers remained in the area looking for the vehicle and at approximately 2:20 AM began receiving 911 calls reporting a subject we were looking for in residential backyards in the area of Second and Crawford Streets. The officers then located the suspect vehicle abandoned with the motor and tires still warm. While continuing to check the area, officers located a male subject walking down the street. The male had stickers from weeds attached to his pants that matched stickers one of them got on their pants from a field they checked near the suspect vehicle.

The suspect was detained and identified as Travis Lorin Criss, 44, of Lakeport, CA. Criss was found to be wanted on a warrant out of Ukiah. Criss was stumbling and emitting a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Criss was arrested and during a search incident to arrest, the keys to the Mitsubishi Lancer were located on his person.

Criss was arrested for the warrant, misdemeanor intoxicated driving and for the felony charge of fleeing from law enforcement with disregard for public safety. He was taken to a local hospital for blood testing and then booked into the Lake County Jail on bail of $40,000.00 but has since posted bail and been released. His vehicle was towed and stored.

We want to thank the alert citizens who called 911 to help direct us to the location of this suspect. Without their assistance, he may have eluded capture this morning.

This incident remains under investigation and we are requesting that anyone with information contact us by sending us a private Facebook message @LakeportPolice, sending us an anonymous text message from your cell phone by texting the words TIP LAKEPORT followed by your message to the number 888777, by calling us at 707-263-5491 or by emailing investigating officers Casey Debolt at cdebolt@lakeportpolice.org or Kaylene Strugnell at kstrugnell@lakeportpolice.org

We have had a high number of intoxicated driving incidents in the City of Lakeport this year and are taking an aggressive stance against it. We thank all those community members who assist us in trying to eliminate the dangerous act of intoxicated driving, on both alcohol and drugs, that continues to put peoples lives at risk. With your help, we can save lives together. Call 911 to report intoxicated drivers.

Boozing suspected by the driver in fatal wreck

(BEL AIR, MD) — The Maryland State Police report that the Fourth of July holiday got off to a deadly start with one person is dead and another is facing DUI charges after a single vehicle crash in Harford County that troopers believe may have involved an impaired driver.

The deceased is identified as Timothy H. Eyring, 49, of Baltimore, Md.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver is an adult male from Bel Air, Md.  He is not being identified at this time due to pending criminal charges that could result from the investigation.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. June 30, 2018, troopers from the Bel Air Barrack responded to the northbound Rt. 924 ramp to the northbound Rt. 1 bypass for the report of a vehicle crash.  Troopers arrived and found one vehicle involved.  Fire and rescue units responded and determined one person, identified as Eyring, was dead at the scene.  A juvenile passenger in the rear seat was uninjured.  The driver reported no injury.

During contact with the driver, troopers detected signs that he was possibly operating under the influence.  Their investigation indicated the driver may have been under the influence.  After consultation with the Harford County State’s Attorney, the driver was taken to University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for a blood test to determine his blood alcohol content.  The results of that test are pending.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded to conduct the investigation.  The preliminary investigation indicates the driver of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche lost control of the vehicle while on the ramp and traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck the guardrail and overturned.  Eyring was a passenger in the front seat and was ejected from the vehicle.  He had not been wearing a seatbelt.

The investigation is continuing.  Upon completion, it will be presented to the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office for review and consultation regarding charges.

Mid-morning booze cruise by Roberto Mejia Lopez blew through a stop sign and ended the life of his passenger

LEONARDTOWN, MD. – A Toyota pickup operated by an intoxicated Roberto Mejia-Lopez, 36, of Lexington Park, Md., blasted through a stop sign at Rt. 5 and Rt. 234 intersection just north of Leonardtown on June 30, 2018, and smashed into a 2016 Isuzu box truck, killing a passenger in the Toyota.

St. Mary’s Sheriff Tim Cameron reports that on June 30, 2018, at approximately 9:56 a.m. deputies found the crash scene spread across the intersection which includes a lane that merges from Rt. 234 into southbound Rt. 5.

The 2016 Isuzu NPR-HD box truck was traveling south on Point Lookout Road and was operated by Kyle Freeman, 24, of Clinton.

Mejia-Lopez was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown, with incapacitating injuries. A passenger in the Toyota Tacoma, Moises Rodriquez, 26, of Lexington Park, was ejected from the vehicle; lifesaving efforts were performed, and Rodriquez was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Police say that Freeman and a 25-year-old passenger in the box truck sustained non-incapacitating injuries.

After the Sheriff’s Department crash team conducted an investigation they determined that a failure to stop at a stop sign and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in the collision.

The case of the Boozy Woozy Jag Driver and his Demo Derby on the Interstate

From The Chesapeake Today
WILMINGTON, DEL. – That stuff about not drinking and driving really doesn’t mean a whole lot to much of the motoring public. What a bunch of hooey, they must think, they can make it, even if navigating an interstate highway on a Saturday night means bouncing off a few BMW’s, Toyotas, and a guardrail or two.

Now, these are the details of the great adventure of a Delaware man who should likely be put into a large leaky dumpster with a box lunch and set adrift on the Atlantic Ocean:

The Delaware State Police have charged Robert A. Powell, 47, of New Castle with multiple criminal and traffic offenses after he fled the scene of a motor vehicle crash, which seriously injured a Newark woman.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:48 p.m., Saturday, June 30, 2018, on I-495 southbound in the area of 12th Street, Wilmington. Powell was driving a 2011 Jaguar XJL, southbound on I-495 in the area of 12th Street when he made a series of unsafe lane changes, with his final change from the center to right lane resulting in his vehicle striking the left side of a 2018 BMW X-1, operated by a 31-year-old Newark woman. After striking the BMW, the Jaguar began to spin and traveled into the I-495 southbound center lane at which time it struck the rear end of a 2010 Toyota, being driven by a 30-year-old Landsdowne, Pennsylvania man. The Jaguar continued to spin before traveling off the right side of the road at which time it struck a concrete barrier before coming to rest on the right shoulder. Both the BMW and Toyota were brought to controlled stops on the right shoulder after the collisions.

FLED LIKE A YELLOW-BELLIED COWARD

Police say that after the Jaguar came to a stop, Powell fled on foot, up a grass embankment towards 12th Street. Responding Troopers were provided a description of Powell and were able to locate him on 12th Street, in the area of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution, at which time he was taken into custody without incident.

During the investigation of the crash scene Troopers located a 9mm handgun in the driver’s door compartment of Powell’s vehicle along with a fully loaded magazine. The magazine was not inserted in the weapon at the time it was recovered.

A 56-year-old female, a passenger in the BMW was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. The operator of the BMW was not injured.

The operator and two passengers in the Toyota were not injured.

Powell was treated and released from the Wilmington Hospital for undetermined injuries at which time he was transported to Delaware State Police Troop 1, where he was charged with the following offenses:

Vehicular Assault 3rd Degree

Possession of a Firearm While Under the Influence

Driving Under the Influence

Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident

Failure to Report an Accident

Improper Lane Change

Inattentive Driving

Unreasonable Speed

Powell was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #11 and released on $4000.00 unsecured bail.

Larry Brandon Maroney Jr Dead in Rollover; Police suspect DUI

DeSoto – Just after 3:00 p.m. today, Louisiana State Police Troop G responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash on LA 177 at Butler Road.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2012 Toyota pickup, driven by 25-year-old Larry Brandon Maroney Jr. of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, was traveling northbound on LA 177. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway, became airborne and overturned coming to rest on the passenger side in a wooded area.

Maroney was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the DeSoto Parish Coroner’s Office.

Excessive speed and impairment are suspected factors. A toxicology sample was taken from Maroney and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists that always wearing a seat belt, avoiding all distractions, obeying the posted speed limit, avoiding fatigued driving, and not driving while impaired can often mean the difference between life and death.

In 2018, Troop G has investigated nine fatal crashes resulting in nine deaths.
