Riverside County Sheriff’s Department DUI arrests:

Jesus Sanchez hid in trees after DUI crash in La Quinta Calif.

Jesus Sanchez hid in trees after DUI crash in La Quinta Calif.

According to Sgt. John Gaw of the Riverside County Sheriff‘s Department, on Friday, September 4, 2015, La Quinta Police officers responded to Monroe Street at Ave 58. in La Quinta, regarding a single car traffic collision.   A blue 2003 Toyota was southbound on Monroe St. and collided with two power poles.  Deputies contacted the driver, Jesus Sanchez, age 62 of Thermal, who was found hiding in the trees near his vehicle.

The investigation revealed that alcohol was a factor in this collision.  Sanchez was determined to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage, and was arrested for misdemeanor DUI.  Sanchez was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation, as a precaution, prior to being booked at the Riverside County jail in Indio.  The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact La Quinta Police Department at 760-863-8990, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP (7867).

The La Quinta Police Department urges all drivers not to drink and drive.  To report suspected drunk drivers, please call 911.

Cops get tough over Labor Day

Eastvale, CA – Officers from the Eastvale Police Department’s DUI Enforcement Team deployed this weekend to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in the Department’s ongoing traffic safety campaign. A DUI Saturation Patrol was conducted on Thursday, September 3, 2015, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and/or arrests.

Results:

  • 0 drivers were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcoholic beverages or drugs
  • 3 field sobriety tests conducted
  • 1 miscellaneous citation issued for traffic violation
  • 2 cited for driving while license suspended/no license issued

After falling dramatically for five straight years, figures for 2012 show an increase to 802 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. Over the course of the past three years in the City of Eastvale, DUI collisions have claimed approximately 4 lives and resulted in 210 injury crashes harming 230 of our friends and neighbors.

Driving under the influence can impact the economy in addition to the pain and suffering of those immediately affected. Conservatively, a fatality has a $1.4 million impact, an injury $70,000, and a crash that only damages property averages nearly $9000.

If you’re drinking and driving, law enforcement will find and arrest you. No warnings, no excuses.  The only way to truly avoid a DUI is to drive sober. There are many ways to get home safely after drinking, and driving isn’t one of them. Designate a sober driver ahead of time, or call a friend or family member. You could also use public transportation or call a taxi. The cost of cab fare is nothing compared to a $10,000 DUI or the cost of someone’s life, and the ‘inconvenience’ of not driving your own car home is nothing compared to the inconvenience of spending time behind bars.

Pedestrian killed by DUI driver just one block from sobriety checkpoint

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver overnight just one block away from a DUI checkpoint – so close, deputies working the checkpoint heard the crash.

Driver Jonathan Rojas, 24, was arrested on DUI charges and gross vehicular manslaughter after the collision on Palm Avenue, between Emory Street and 10th Avenue, in Imperial Beach around 12:40 a.m. Saturday.   ….MORE

Spike in Fatal DUIs Draws Concern, Drunk Driving Reminder from Law Enforcement
11 People Killed in DUI Crashes This Summer, Six in August Alone

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis joined law enforcement leaders today to express serious concerns over the troubling number of fatal accidents that have occurred over the summer which are a direct result of drinking and driving. Eleven people have been killed in a series of crashes around San Diego County since May and 23 serious or fatal DUI cases issued since January 1. Five crashes have occurred in August alone, killing six people.

“This has been a summer of shame when it comes to fatal DUIs,” said DA Dumanis. “The conduct of the individuals who caused these crashes is horrific. We’ve had drunks driving the wrong way on the highway, individuals consuming alcohol for hours before getting behind the wheel and a young mother driving with her children in the car while using drugs. Tragically, lives have been lost because of these preventable crimes, which should serve as a wakeup call to anyone even thinking about driving under the influence.”

One year ago, the DA’s Office launched a DUI Homicide Unit to prosecute fatalities and serious injuries. The unit, made up of two prosecutors and two investigators, has been so busy they have had to rely on additional prosecutors in the office. Funding for this unit comes in part from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Last year more than 12,330 DUI-related cases were prosecuted in San Diego County. Of that number, the District Attorney’s Office prosecuted 363 DUI with injury cases and 17 involving fatalities. During the same time period, 46 percent of DUI drivers in the county had a blood alcohol content higher than .15 percent – nearly twice the legal limit. As we go into the Labor Day weekend, law enforcement will be cracking down on suspected DUI drivers through added sobriety check points and a ‘no tolerance approach’ to impaired driving.

Pennsylvania: Lancaster Judge Madenspacher sentenced repeat DUI driver Mitchell Runk to 17 years for killing Annastasia Leberfinger

Mitchell Runk DUI conviction in Lancaster County PA fatal 091015

A Lancaster County judge jailed a repeat drunk driver up to 17 years for causing a high-speed crash two years ago that killed a woman.

Judge Joseph Madenspacher ordered maximum sentences Wednesday on three charges in the case against Mitchell G. Runk, who pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while DUI and other offenses.

In all, Runk, 28, will serve 8 ¾ to 17 years in state prison.

Runk’s blood-alcohol level was .219 percent at the time of the 2013 crash in West Donegal Township that killed 20-year-old Annastasia Leberfinger.

He was driving, on a suspended license from a past DUI, over 100 mph when his Hyundai coupe missed a turn on Route 230 near Cedar Road. Investigators determined the car was traveling between 104 and 116 mph when the car struck an embankment.

Both occupants were ejected from the car. Leberfinger was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Lancaster County Assistant District Attorney Todd E. Brown told the judge Runk was on a path to have something this tragic happen. He had two DUI charges in 2009 and other drug offenses on his record, Brown said.

Judge Madenspacher pointed to the car’s speed, Runk’s criminal past, and his extremely high blood-alcohol level – more than twice Pennsylvania’s legal limit for drivers – as reasons for the sentence.

Runk faced a mandatory minimum, 3-year jail term on the vehicular homicide while DUI charge.

Runk also was ordered to pay $1,975 in restitution costs related to Leberfinger’s funeral.

Pennsylvania: Ivana Bradley sent to jail for 3 days for DUI with two kids in car

BRADLEY, Ivana jailed for DUI with kids in vehicle Lancaster Pa 091015

A York woman was jailed Thursday after pleading guilty in Lancaster County Court to driving drunk with two young children in her car earlier this year on Manheim Pike.

Ivana S. Bradley will serve at least three days at Lancaster County Prison, and up to 23 months, for the Feb. 3 incident at Sheetz, 1180 Manheim Pike.

Witnesses reported Bradley driving erratically and police responded to the Sheetz and found Bradley and her two children, ages 6 and 8, in her car.

The car was freshly damaged and had a flat tire. Bradley tried to drive away from police, but was stopped.

Police reported she was visibly intoxicated; she refused Breathalyzer and blood tests for her blood-alcohol level.

No one was hurt.

Bradley pleaded guilty and was sentenced Thursday by County Judge Donald Totaro, according to Assistant District Attorney Kevin McGarry.

In addition to the 3 days-to-23-months jail sentence, Bradley was ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, complete Alcohol Safety School and undergo drug and alcohol treatment. Her license will be suspended for a year and she must complete 100 hours of community service, the judge ordered.

Pennsylvania: Court upholds long jail sentence for DUI killer Carlos Rene Garcia in death of Kaitlyn Berry

Carlos Garcia, charged with DUI in fatal crash in Penn.

A Pennsylvania appeals court has upheld the prison sentence for a Lancaster man charged with causing fatal vehicle crash while drunk and speeding just outside the city in 2014.

A Lancaster County judge previously jailed Carlos Rene Garcia for 19 ¼ to 38 years for causing the Feb. 22, 2014, crash that killed 24-year-old Kaitlyn Berry and seriously injured her mother.

At the time, it was the longest prison term ever ordered in Lancaster County on a vehicular homicide while DUI case.

Garcia appealed to the state Superior Court for a new sentence, arguing the term was excessive. That was recently denied.

The high court decided that the sentencing judge gave reasons for the sentence considered all appropriate factors.

“The trial court did not abuse its discretion in sentencing Garcia,” the Superior Court states in its 13-page opinion.

Assistant District Attorney Christine L. Wilson prosecuted the case.

The fatality is one of many District Attorney Craig Stedman considered in asking for harsher punishment and more court oversight of repeat DUI offenders.

Garcia’s blood-alcohol level was .144 percent shortly after the crash, and he was driving on a suspended license from a prior DUI. The legal limit for drivers in Pennsylvania is .08 percent.

In April, Thomas Gallagher Jr. was jailed 20 to 50 years after pleading guilty to third-degree murder regarding a DUI crash that killed a recent high-school graduate in West Lampeter Township.

Regina Gallegos of Indio Calif DUI by Coachella Police 090415

Regina Gallegos of Indio Calif DUI by Coachella Police 090415

Regina Gallegos, age 24 of Indio, and Patricia Espinoza, age 42 of Indio, were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Both Gallegos and Espinoza were booked into the Riverside County jail in Indio.

Statistics show that alcohol and drug impaired driving can lead to serious injury and/or death. The city of Coachella and the Coachella Police Department remain steadfast in its effort of reducing driver-impaired traffic collisions within the city, while increasing public safety and awareness regarding the dangers of impaired driving.

This checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9-1-1!

On Friday, September 4, 2015, beginning at 7:00 PM, the Coachella Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint in the area of Ave. 50 and Van Buren Blvd. The checkpoint was one of many DUI and traffic-related operations conducted throughout the year, in a collaborative effort to deter drunk driving while increasing public safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Ninety percent of California drivers approve of checkpoints.

Approximately 452 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Sixteen vehicles were diverted to secondary screening.

  • Eight field sobriety tests were conducted;
  • Two drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs;
  • Three drivers were cited for driving without a valid driver’s license;
  • One driver was cited for a miscellaneous equipment violation;
  • Two vehicles were towed.
