“It kind of keeps me human. You see, I’m about to change their lives; your mom and dad, that is. In about five minutes, they will never be the same, they will never be happy again. Right now, to be honest, you’re just a nameless dead body that feels like a wet bag of newspapers that we have been pounding on, sticking IV lines and tubes and needles in, trying desperately to save you. There’s no motion, no life, nothing to tell me you once had dreams or aspirations. I owe it to them to learn just a bit about you before I go in.
Because right now . . . all I am is mad at you, for what you did to yourself and what you are about to do to them.
I know nothing about you. I owe it to your mom to peek inside of your once-living world.
Maybe you were texting instead of watching the road, or you were drunk when you should have Ubered. Perhaps you snorted heroin or Xanax for the first time or a line of coke, tried meth or popped a Vicodin at the campus party and did a couple shots. Maybe you just rode your bike without a helmet or didn’t heed your parents’ warning when they asked you not to hang out with that “friend,” or to be more cautious when coming to a four-way stop. Maybe you just gave up.
Maybe it was just your time, but chances are . . . it wasn’t.
So I pick up your faded picture of your driver’s license and click on my iPhone, flip to Facebook and search your name. Chances are we’ll have one mutual friend somewhere. I know a lot of people.
I see you wearing the same necklace and earrings that now sit in a specimen cup on the counter, the same ball cap or jacket that has been split open with trauma scissors and pulled under the backboard, the lining stained with blood. Looks like you were wearing it to the U2 concert. I heard it was great.
I see your smile, how it should be, the color of eyes when they are filled with life, your time on the beach, blowing out candles, Christmas at Grandma’s; oh you have a Maltese, too. I see that. I see you standing with your mom and dad in front of the sign to your college. Good, I’ll know exactly who they are when I walk into the room. It makes it that much easier for me, one less question I need to ask.
You’re kind of lucky that you don’t have to see it. Dad screaming your name over and over, mom pulling her hair out, curled up on the floor with her hand over her head as if she’s trying to protect herself from unseen blows.
I check your Facebook page before I tell them you’re dead because it reminds me that I am talking about a person, someone they love; it quiets the voice in my head that is screaming at you right now shouting: ‘How could you do this to them, to people you are supposed to love!’”
For the love of God, put down your phone, slow down, come to a complete stop, wear your seatbelt, go the speed limit, and drive like your life depends on it. Because it does. And if that’s not enough, drive like other peoples’ lives depend on it…because it does.
Don’t ruin your family’s or our holiday season…
In one moment your decision changes lives. Decatur High School (Federal Way, WA) students Nicholas Hodgins and Derek King were killed alongside I-5 when a driver made the decision to drive drunk. They would have graduated in three days.

Anthony Norris charged with OWI in a fatal pileup on Indiana Toll Road
HAMMOND-Indiana State Police report that on Feb. 2, 2020, at approximately 2:03 a.m., Trooper Dennis Griffin was dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on I-80/94 eastbound lanes at the 2.2 mile-marker. The vehicle, a white 2019 Chevrolet Camaro, had struck the impact attenuator which resulted in two lanes being blocked. Through Trooper Griffin’s investigation, he had reason to believe that the driver of the vehicle was impaired via alcoholic beverages.
The driver, Anthony Van Norris, 35 years of age from Merrillville, IN, refused to submit to a chemical test and was taken into custody. At approximately 2:48 a.m., a secondary crash occurred in the back-up on I-80/94 eastbound at the 2.0 mile-marker. Assistance was requested from the Indiana State Police Toll Road District as well as from the Hammond Police Department.
Police say that Norris was transported to Southlake Methodist by Trooper Benjamin Beers where a search warrant was obtained and a blood draw was completed. Toxicology results are pending. Norris was transported to the Lake County Jail and a preliminary charge of O.W.I. Refusal- Class A Misdemeanor is being submitted to the Lake County Prosecutor.
Trooper Griffin arrived at the scene of the second crash and observed three vehicles, a semi, and two passenger vehicles. One of the vehicles, a white 1995 Lincoln was engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Griffin shows that a 2013 Toyota Highlander, driven by Shenay Neal, 44, from Crown Point, IN was traveling in the far left lane at a high rate of speed.
The Toyota rear-ended the Lincoln, causing the Lincoln to spin to the left lane where it burst into flames. The Toyota then continued straight and rear-ended a second vehicle which was a 2018 Utility semi-trailer being pulled by a 2019 International tractor.
The semi is operated by TTS Logistics, LLC of Mount Pleasant, MI. The truck was being driven by Lance A. Forbus, 32 from Dallas, TX. The drivers of the Highlander and International were both transported for treatment of minor injuries. Attempts were made to remove the driver of the Lincoln, however, they were unsuccessful due to the fire. The driver of the Lincoln was declared deceased at the scene by the Lake County Coroner. The name of the deceased is pending positive identification by the Lake County Coroner.
Upon completion, a copy of the investigation will be forwarded to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
As this fatal crash was being investigated, a third crash took place in the backup at the 0.7 mile- marker which involved 7 vehicles. None of those drivers or passengers were injured, however, there was also lane blockage which resulted in an additional backup.
A fourth crash took place in the back-up at the 0.1 mile-marker. That crash involved a semi and passenger vehicle and resulted in minor injuries and lane blockage as well.
Assisting at the scene was the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Hammond Fire/EMS, Hammond Police Department, Indiana State Police Toll Road, and Bert’s Towing.

DWI HIT PARADE: Shawn H. Wingate dragged a trophy state highway sign under
his Dodge Ram truck as he earned his 5th DWI arrest in Delaware
SEAFORD, DEL. – How many times does a DWI driver get to rack up a DWI conviction before a Judge in Delaware will put him or her in prison for any meaningful time in order to protect the lives of the public? Rebekah Lynn Warren (DOB 11/25/1971), OF Ann Arbor, Michigan, representing the 55th District of the Michigan House of Representatives since January 1, 2019. She was elected to this position on November 6, 2018, beating Republican opponent Bob Baird, 74% to 26%.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (WXYZ) — Under the Freedom of Information Act, 7 Action News has obtained Auburn Hills Police video of the arrest of State Representative Rebekah Warren on December 26, 2019. And Warren is clearly upset that her arrest is being recorded by police cameras.
“You don’t understand, I’m elected. I’m a senator. People will be, like, the senator got arrested. That’ll be, like, (expletive). This is going to be the most famous arrest you’ve ever made,” Warren said on video.
Warren was placed under arrest after police received several 911 calls reporting a black Jeep Cherokee swerving on I-75.

From Fox News
She goes on to tell the officer in the video that there’s going to be a moment that they’re both going to be on TV.
“It’s going to be, like, the senator from Ann Arbor’s career is over,” Warren says.
The station reported that at one point Warren became upset at being handcuffed, saying she hadn’t been “aggressive.”

Police said Warren was stopped after an officer saw her swerving in traffic and sideswiping a guardrail on Interstate 75, according to the station.
After refusing to submit to a breath test, police took her to a hospital where her blood was drawn, FOX 2 Detroit reported.
The test came back as .21, more than twice the legal limit of .08 and well above .17 the limit considered super drunk under Michigan law, the station reported.
Kevin Coffay, who was sentenced in 2012 for a drunken-driving crash that killed three of his friends received more prison time Feb. 3, 2020, after trying to drive with alcohol in his system numerous times and violating his probation.
Three people were killed: Spencer Datt, 18; Johnny Hoover, 20; and Haeley McGuire, 18. A fourth passenger, a 19-year-old, was injured but survived.
Kevin Coffay, 28, appeared in Montgomery County Circuit Court Monday and a judge ordered him to serve seven more years in prison — the amount of time that was suspended from his original sentence. MORE
“It could easily be characterized as the worst … DUI accident in the history of this county,” Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said.
Coffay fled the scene. When police found him about three hours later, his blood alcohol content was still twice the legal limit, prosecutors said.
According to court documents, Coffay had a blood alcohol level of 0.16. The test was done more than three hours after the crash. Coffay’s car left Olney-Laytonsville Road and hit a tree. Authorities said that Coffay then fled from the scene of the accident. He was found near his home in Rockville about three hours later with a strong odor of alcohol.
He was initially held on $500,000 bond. A judge then reduced it to $50,000 and ruled that he did not need an electronic monitor.
Coffay pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene. He was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison.
But a panel of judges reduced his sentence to eight years in prison and five years of probation. Ultimately, he was released after serving four years.
CAN ANYONE UNDERSTAND THE DECISION OF THESE THREE BOZO JUDGES?
In making its decision, the three-judge panel said that Coffay shouldn’t pay for the larger cultural problem of drunk driving; that the state didn’t give Coffay credit for pleading guilty; that the initial sentencing judge went outside the sentencing guidelines and that the victims had voluntarily gotten into the vehicle with Coffay.
Family members of the victims were livid at the decision.
“The reduction of this sentence means our children’s lives mean nothing,” said one.
Coffay eventually got a driver’s license again in 2018, and had to drive with an interlock device to monitor his sobriety.
Prosecutors said Monday Coffay squandered his second chance by continuing to engage in the same reckless behavior that led to the fatal crash in 2011.
According to court documents, he tried to drive after drinking more than 100 different times.
“[He would] get drunk in D.C., sleep it off and then drive home the next day, and the ignition interlock is picking up when he has levels of alcohol in his system,” prosecutor Bryan Roslund said.
He killed his friends and ran from the scene, lied to police, claimed he hit a small animal…now he wants out of prison so he can tell other boozing kids not to be an idiot like he is…
FROM WTOP: McCarthy said prosecutors learned through an intercepted call from Coffay while he was in jail that Coffay had discussed attempting to “fake the court out” by claiming he was suffering emotional trauma from the crash.
“To hear that he was discussing with friends coming to court and gaming the court, claiming he had PTSD, is offensive to every person standing behind me,” McCarthy said. He added that the crash victims’ families continue to “suffer emotional trauma as a result of their loss.”
“That we are here is stunning to us,” McCarthy said.
Prosecutors said since September 2018, an ignition interlock device on Coffay’s car has caught him with alcohol on his breath more than 100 times. MORE
From The Washington Post:
Kevin Coffay and several friends had left a party. Coffay was drunk, and he slammed a Toyota Corolla into a tree on the side of a Montgomery County road about 3 a.m.
“The sentence will never bring back Johnny, Haeley or Spencer,” Hoover’s mother, Carolyn Hoover, said afterward.

POLICE CHIEF NICK METZ SHOULD RESIGN AND HIRE ON AS THE UNION SHOP STEWARD
In an internal email to the Aurora Police Department obtained by ABC News, Police Chief Nick Metz wrote on Friday: “I unequivocally stand by my decision regarding the involved officer.”
“I know cops are human beings. You are not perfect. You are exposed to higher levels of stress and trauma than the general public will ever truly understand,” Metz wrote. “We all know that trauma, suicide, and substance abuse continue to be huge problems in our profession.”
FROM ABC NEWS – Colorado cop won’t face charges Bodycam footage showed Aurora officer Nathan Meier passed out in his patrol car and a hospital test later revealed a blood alcohol count over five times the legal limit.ABCNews.com
A Colorado district attorney expressed frustration Thursday at not being able to prosecute an Aurora police officer who was found passed out drunk in his car last year, calling the department’s failure to launch a DUI investigation a double standard meant to protect one of its own.
Officer Nathan Meier was found unresponsive in his city-owned police car parked in the middle of an Aurora street on March 29, 2019. Meier was armed and in uniform. Officers, including Deputy Chief Paul O’Keefe who was the first police officer on the scene, reported smelling a faint smell of alcohol on Meier and in his vehicle.
“He’s a little intoxicated,” one lieutenant tells another in a conversation captured on body-worn camera footage.
Despite the apparent signs that the officer was intoxicated, District Attorney George Brauchler says O’Keefe later told internal affairs investigators that he felt he didn’t have enough evidence for a DUI investigation and that he “erred on the side of protecting [Meier].”
“I am incredibly frustrated,” Brauchler said. “Bottom line is if one of us had been in that car, and not officer Nathan Meier, do I think it would it have been treated differently? I do.”

King County: The Washington State Patrol reports that at approximately 1:00 am on February 12, 2020, Trooper Harms stopped a vehicle eastbound I- 90 just west of East Mercer. Due to Trooper Harms’s observations of possible impairment, the driver was asked to step out of the vehicle and perform voluntary field tests. The field tests led Trooper Harms to develop probable cause to place the subject under arrest for suspected impairment.
When Trooper Harms went to place the suspect under arrest, the suspect resisted and an altercation ensued. The suspect struck Trooper Harms while they were struggling on the right shoulder. As the altercation continued the suspect was able to get into his vehicle with Trooper Harms right beside him.
Washington State Patrol
Police say that the suspect placed the vehicle in drive and began to drive eastbound in lane 1. The altercation continued until the vehicle slowed in lane one about 200 yards east of the original stop. It was at this point that Trooper Harms was pushed from the vehicle by the suspect while traveling at 25 to 30 mph and ended up sliding on his back for approximately 40 feet ending up in between lanes two and three. The suspect fled continuing eastbound on I-90.
There was a motorist that observed what was occurring and had their hazards activated and essentially protected Trooper Harms until he could get up and to the shoulder.
Trooper Harms ran back to his vehicle and advised communications what occurred and searched for the suspect which he was unable to locate. During the initial investigation, the suspect provided Trooper Harms with Texas identification. The vehicle was a rented 2019 Mazda CX5. The suspect also gave an address in Seattle where he was coming from when he was stopped.
Police say that later in the morning on February 12, 2020, troopers and detectives continued to search for this suspect and were able to locate the vehicle at the address given which was an apartment complex in the 1900 block of 2nd Avenue in Seattle. The suspect did not provide an apartment number so troopers continued to watch the vehicle and contacted the Seattle Police Department (SPD) for assistance. The north and south SPD ProAct teams became involved which also included the Department of Corrections Officers.
The address that was given by the suspect had an apartment number that was associated with an individual that had an active felony Department of Corrections warrants and this allowed entry into this unit. Once inside this apartment, it was determined that the suspect from this incident was the same individual that had the felony warrant and was using a stolen identity from the individual in Texas. The actual identity of this suspect is 31-year-old Dontrel O. West of Seattle.
